Description

The comet is getting higher in the sky, and the color is now more natural. The previous photos had that red tint because the comet was so low on the horizon. Last night, the comet was about 17 degrees altitude from the horizon, and tonight it will be over 19 degrees. Toward the end of July, the comet will be about 30 degrees elevation. Although the comet is moving away from us, and it is getting smaller and fainter each night, the higher location in the sky makes up for it.

Last nights photo clearly shows both the gas tail and the dust tail. The gas tail is the fainter and straighter streak on the left side of the photo. The dust tail is the large fan shaped tail and is formed because the dust is moving slower off the comet, as pushed by the solar wind of the sun. Since the comet is moving toward the left side of this photo, about a few degrees a day, the dust is swept toward the right in the photo.
